PROJECT 3
LIGHT
ARC 257 Architectural Design II
This project is a chapel designed for Farmingdale State College that focuses on the creative use of light and spatial design to shape the atmosphere of the building. Through the study of seasonal sunlight patterns and site conditions, the chapel’s orientation and form were developed to control how natural light enters the space throughout the day. The design creates a calm and visually inspiring environment that encourages reflection and connection with the surrounding landscape.

LIGHT BACKGROUND RESEARCH

The light in the Mount Angel Abbey Library is reflected and softened through carefully placed windows, skylights, and light-colored interior surfaces. Natural light enters indirectly, creating a calm atmosphere with gentle shadows and an even glow throughout the space.
Inside the library, various interior elements, such as the bookcases, help guide and reflect light upward toward the ceiling. In addition, light entering from the roof is directed toward specific areas through the circular openings beneath it, along with the use of beams and columns.

SITE SELECTION
I chose this location for the church because it allows unobstructed sunlight to reach the building, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere through natural light. The site is also positioned away from the main academic buildings, providing a quieter and more peaceful environment that supports reflection and contemplation.
